Chair Talk

July 2017

This Chair talk is a little late being distributed because I needed to get more information on Golf after the CC meeting and scheduling the speakers.

OKRIE vs. STATE 0F MICHIGAN UPDATE

On June 28, 2017, Attorney Gary P. Supanich filed a Petition for a writ of certiorari with the United States Supreme Court. The State’s response is due (but not required) by August 4, 2017. On September 25, 2017 the Court will review all petitions and determine what cases they will hear. The Docket number of the Okrie case is 17-34. The printing costs and filing fees were $6375.00 to file the petition. We still need donations/contributions for attorney fees. Contributions can be sent to:

AUGUST 4TH CC MEETING DETAILS
  1. Golfers: Hantz will provide use of their Golf Course (and golf carts) at no charge to SERA members wanting to use their facilities on August 4th. Lisa McClain and I suggest that our SERA golfers consider a donation/contribution to the Hantz Foundation in lieu of payment for golf. The Hantz Foundation works to enhance the lives of residents living on the East side of Detroit through education, health and beautification of the city.
  2. Program/Presentations:
    1. I have made arrangements to have Attorney Gary Supanich address the delegates at approximately 11:00 a.m. with an update on the Okrie vs. State of Michigan lawsuit.
    2. Walt Sorg (Voters Not Politicians) will present a program on the redistricting reform petition drive after lunch. I would ask that Chapter leaders consider getting involved in this redistricting reform effort.
Editor’s note: Bob Kopasz is Chair of the Michigan SERA Council. He may be reached at P.O. Box 692, Mt. Morris, MI 48458; phone 810/240-8380.
