Chair Talk

September 2005

As of this date, I still haven’t heard from David Fink (Director of OSE) as to a decision made regarding the new Medicare Part D plan and how it would affect State retirees that are on Medicare. I have contacted OSE but have not received an answer as yet. As I had said last month, the State was looking at 2 options (Subsidy or a Prescription Drug Plan). Apparently, the MPSERS (Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System) Board on August 18 approved a PDP Plan for Medicare eligible Public School Retirees. There was an interest by the State to explore the option of placing State retirees in that plan. As soon as I hear from OSE as to what option they will choose, I will notify Chapter Presidents and have a notice placed on our website. Whatever decision the State makes will probably not have a negative effect on retirees.

I hope to have the first meeting of the Technology Committee immediately following the October Executive Committee meeting. I have received some e-mails from retirees expressing an interest on serving on this committee. I will contact those people interested about two weeks before the next meeting.

If your Chapter is seeking a speaker for one of your meetings you may want to contact Lisa Stout (Senior Account Manager at Express Scripts) and invite her to be a speaker. Lisa has expressed an interest in attending more SERA Chapter meetings. Lisa can be reached at 248-539-3406 or toll free: 800-453-5566 ext. 4.

I have sent a letter inviting Governor Granholm to be our Guest/Speaker at the November 3 CC meeting.

Editor’s note: Bob Kopasz is Chair of the Michigan SERA Council. He may be reached at P.O. Box 692, Mt. Morris, MI 48458; phone 810/240-8380
